Accessing counselling should feel possible not financially overwhelming. One of the most common questions we hear is: “Is online therapy covered by insurance?”
The good news is that in many cases, yes! Online counselling is covered by extended health benefits and third-party funding programs. With the growth of virtual care, most insurance providers now recognize online therapy the same way they recognize in-person sessions.
Below, we’ll walk you through how to access coverage, how to check your benefits discreetly, and what options may be available if you don’t currently have workplace insurance.
If you have extended health benefits through your workplace, there is a strong chance counselling services are included. Many employer benefit packages provide coverage for sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Psychologist, Social Worker, or other regulated mental health professional. It is important to note that you do not need to ask people at your work directly about this information, it is always an option to call the benefit provider to inquire more about it. If you have a benefit portal, it is also possible to review the benefit portal to determine specific information about what services are covered by your benefits.
Here’s how to get started:
Most employers provide a digital or printed benefits package outlining what is covered. Look under sections like:
If you are having a hard time finding the information you may be able to call your provider directly to ask more details about your specific benefits coverage.
Check:
Insurance providers typically specify which types of professionals are eligible. Before booking, ensure the therapist’s designation matches what your plan requires. It is important to note that all counselling who work at Virtual Connect are registered with a regulatory body. However, some benefits plans would like someone who holds a specific designation eg. psychotherapist not a social worker.
Following your counselling appointment we will provide you with a receipt with all the information necessary to be reimbursed from your benefits. This will allow you to submit directly to them, if there is any additional information that is needed from Virtual Connect, please send us and email at info@virtualconnect.ca for any assistance and we would be happy to support you.
