Registered Psychotherapist, MA, M.Phil
Complex Trauma, Longstanding Dysfunctional Patterns Psychotherapist.
Originally trained as a clinical psychologist abroad, I possess a deep understanding of how emotional and mental health struggles can impact people’s inner and social lives. Having been a client myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming starting the counselling process can be at time. My goal is to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible, as I walk along side you on your counselling journey. Over the last decade, my experiences with clients have been with individuals from all walks of life, leading me to recognize that our internal world often takes precedence over many of our external circumstances.
My specialization lies in working with people presenting with complex trauma.
Trauma is the experience wherein we experience a disruption of a protective barrier in our mind, which protects us from harmful and painful excessive stimulation. Thus when something painful occurs and it goes beyond our threshold of toleration, that experience is processed as a traumatic event. Whether you have experienced a single incident traumatic event, or prolonged traumatic experiences, there are options to process and work through them. Sometimes it can be hard to link how specific traumatic events both impact and show up in our everyday life, as we learn to live with the impacts of these events. Counselling can offer a place to process the events and move away from these experiences having an impact on daily functioning.
Complex trauma or experiencing multiple traumatic events refers to scenarios where the person has encountered multiple traumatic scenarios. This can look like the loss of relationships, loss of home, early painful life experiences like neglect, or abuse. This ends up being a series of traumatic experiences and scenarios wherein the person felt very overwhelmed for chronic periods of time. This can shape someone’s reality, as well as the way they view themselves and the world around them.
In addition to working with those who have experienced trauma, I also support those who have experienced depression, anxiety, immigration related loss/grief, relational difficulties, chronic illness, personality disorders, medically unexplained physical symptoms, and dissociative experiences.
I will work with you to alleviate your suffering, listen to you intently and help you gain more agency over your external and internal world. My specialization is psychoanalytic psychotherapy. What does psychoanalytical work mean? This means that I also work with those aspects of your mind which lie outside of your awareness, are unconscious and which exude a strong impact on your everyday functioning. For example, it happens so often that we want to do one thing and do the opposite or we do things which we know aren’t good for us and yet we can’t help it. If we do not know where to starts dreams can also tell us a lot about our unconscious.
Our goals together are driven by your wants and desires. Often the focus is reducing emotional distress and going beyond symptom reduction and aims to find sustainable, long-term change. If you are looking for a place to feel heard, please reach out today for your free, 15-minute consultation!
